CHINATOWN SINGAPORE


In Chinese, Singapore's Chinatown is known as Niu che sui which means  "bull -cart water", it's a way of transporting water supply in the 19th century.


Singapore's Chinatown is an ethnic neighbourhood featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements and a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. Chinatown is located within the larger district of Outram: it has five districts; kreta ayer, telok ayer, bukit pasoh, tanjong pagarand ann siang hill.


The central streets of chinatown around the pagoda are packed with stalls selling all sorts of chinese  trinkets.




Pagoda Street -  takes its name from the Sri Mariammam Temple. On earlier days it was one of the centres of slave traffic and opium smoking dens.


Temple Street -  refers to Sri Mariamman Temple which is located on the South Bridge Road end of the street.
Kreta Ayer is considered the heart of chinatown. it is home to homegrown brands, assortment of traditional trades and food hawkers .



 Chinatown complex, 3 storey complex for the best choices of basic  necessities, is also located at this area. On its level 2 are some the best hawkers.






Also found in the area :
Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, it houses the priceless relic- the tooth of Buddha.


Sri Mariamman Temple is still one of the most important place of worship for Hindu devotess in Singapore.


People's park complex is one of the more well known malls in chinatown for electronics,clothing and chinese medicines.

at the junction of kreta ayer road and keong saik road is the Sri Sithi VInayagar Temple, that was built in 1925.
